One of the best New Year’s Resolutions I ever heard was from a news personality who said his resolution was to “Pet more dogs.” Sounds like a worthy undertaking to me.
Do you make New Year’s resolutions? There’s still time!
I must admit, I am a sucker for making New Year’s Resolutions. But I am notorious for not keeping them. There is not a single resolution I will not break. Case in point: one year, frustrated by my repeated failure to stick to any resolutions I resolved to stop making New Year’s Resolutions! Years later, I broke that one, too.
How is it that the new year gives rise to our desire to improve in some way? Perhaps because year-end financials provide solid data and an urge to do better. Or perhaps the biggest holiday season of the year leaves us feeling the sluggish effects of overindulgence and ready for a change.
Whatever the reason, the draw of making a New Year’s Resolution pulls me back, and now it’s an important time of reflection. I’m not always successful, but I keep at it. I even look forward to the thoughtful analysis that leads me to my yearly resolution. Only now it’s part of a business plan.
My resolve this year is about consistent improvement in several areas which require behavioral change. I boiled it down to a mantra.
Show Up. Do the Work. Everyday.
This encourages me to work on my various business and life goals with intention every day. These include regular times to write, to develop as a designer and teacher, to create content, and to market and run my business. To make business building a daily practice.
And I’ll try to pet more dogs this year, too.
How about you? What are your New Year’s Resolutions?
